Chiropractic Tables: What to Consider Before Buying

Chiropractic Tables

B123 Electric Massage Bed with Heat USD 420

I'm not a chiropractor, but I've spent time talking to several about their equipment. And one thing stands out: they're obsessive about their tables. For good reason — a chiropractor's table is their primary tool, and the wrong one makes their job harder and their patients less comfortable.

If you're in the market for a chiropractic table, here's what you need to know.

Types of Chiropractic Tables

Stationary tables — Fixed height and position. These are the most affordable option and work well for practices with a consistent patient demographic.

Elevation tables (electric or hydraulic) — Adjustable height to accommodate different practitioners and patients. Electric is smoother and easier to control.

Drop tables (segment drop) — These have sections that "drop" a few millimeters when the chiropractor applies thrust. The drop mechanism reduces the force needed for adjustments, making treatments more comfortable for patients.

Flexion-distraction tables — Designed for spinal decompression therapy. These tables have a movable lower section that creates a gentle stretching motion in the spine.

Key Features to Evaluate

Face cradle design — Patients spend significant time face-down. The face cradle must be well-padded and adjustable for different face sizes and neck positions.

Padding density — Too soft and the patient sinks, making adjustments harder. Too firm and it's uncomfortable. High-density foam with a medium feel is the standard.

Width — Chiropractic tables tend to be narrower than massage tables — around 55-65cm (22-26 inches) — to allow the practitioner to stand close and apply proper leverage.

Weight capacity — Minimum 250kg (550lbs). Chiropractic adjustments require a rock-solid base.

Electric vs Manual

Electric elevation tables are increasingly standard in modern chiropractic practices. The benefits: smooth height adjustment, memory positions for common techniques, and foot pedal control.

Manual tables are lighter, cheaper, and don't need electricity. They're a good choice for mobile practices or budget-conscious startups.

If you go electric, make sure the motor is quiet and the backup manual pump works in case of power failure.

FAQ

Q: Can a massage table be used as a chiropractic table?
A: Not really. Massage tables are too wide and soft for effective chiropractic work. The extra width prevents proper positioning.

Q: What's the lifespan of a professional chiropractic table?
A: 10-15 years with proper maintenance. The upholstery may need replacing every 5-7 years.

Q: Do I need a drop table for basic work?
A: No, but drop tables make certain techniques easier and more comfortable for patients.
