Massage Beds: A No-Nonsense Buying Guide for Salon Owners

Massage Beds

B123 Electric Massage Bed with Heat USD 420

The first time I bought a beauty bed (or what I thought was a beauty bed), I made every mistake, I made every mistake you can imagine. Wrong size, wrong upholstery, no face cradle adjustment. It lasted six months before I replaced it — and that was an expensive lesson.

After helping dozens of salon owners set up their treatment rooms, here's what I've learned about choosing the right massage bed.

Electric vs Manual: Which One?

Electric massage beds are becoming the standard. A foot pedal or remote control adjusts the backrest, leg section, and height. For facial treatments, esthetician services, and lash applications, electric adjustment means you (and your client) don't have to stop the treatment to reposition.

Manual (hydraulic) beds are cheaper but require more effort. You pump a foot pedal to raise the bed and pull a lever to lower it. These work fine for occasional use or basic massage services.

Honestly? If your budget allows, go electric. The convenience pays for itself within months.

What Size Do You Need?

Standard massage beds are about 185-195cm (73-77 inches) long and 65-75cm (26-30 inches) wide. But here's what most people overlook:

The width matters more than you think. A narrow bed (65cm) is fine for basic massage but uncomfortable for larger clients. A 75cm+ wide bed accommodates everyone comfortably.

Weight capacity is equally important. Look for beds rated at least 200kg (440lbs). You don't want a bed that wobbles or creaks mid-treatment.

Upholstery: PU Leather vs Fabric

PU leather wins almost every time for salon use. It's waterproof, easy to sanitize, and looks professional for years. The downside? It can be sweaty in hot climates.

Fabric is breathable and comfortable but absorbs oils and lotions. For a salon doing multiple treatments daily, fabric is a sanitation nightmare.

My recommendation: PU leather with a breathable layer underneath. Best of both worlds.

Features That Actually Matter

Face cradle — Must be adjustable for height and angle. A fixed face cradle is the #1 complaint I hear from massage therapists.

Armrests — Removable armrests are useful. Clients getting facials or lash treatments need them down. Massage clients need them up.

Wheels — Not all beds come with wheels. If you need to move the bed for cleaning or room reconfiguration, make sure wheels are included or available.

Heat and vibration — Nice-to-have features but not essential. They help with relaxation but add cost.

FAQ

Q: Is a massage bed the same as a beauty bed?
A: Similar but not identical. Massage beds tend to be wider with more padding. Beauty beds (for facials, lash, waxing) are often narrower with more precise adjustment for face-down treatments.

Q: How often should I replace the upholstery?
A: With good PU leather and daily cleaning, expect 3-5 years before it starts showing wear. Reupholstering is cheaper than replacing the whole bed.

Q: What's the best massage bed brand?
A: I'm biased, but Daimi's massage beds offer excellent value — CE-certified motors, quality PU leather, and customizable colors. We ship internationally with real-time tracking.
