A few years back, I was helping a salon owner in LA set up her second location. Small space, no plumbing access in the room she wanted to use. She was dead set on offering head spa services but thought she'd have to rip up the floor to run water lines.

Turns out, she didn't. That was my first real encounter with a non-plumbed head spa bed, and honestly? It changed how I think about salon layout.

If you're in a rented space, running a mobile setup, or just don't want to deal with plumbing contractors, here's what I've learned.

What even is a "no plumbing" head spa bed?

Simple. Instead of connecting to your building's water supply, these beds have a built-in tank. You fill it up, it heats the water, and a pump handles the flow. No pipes, no permits, no plumber.

Some use a detachable tank you can refill at a sink. Others have a fixed reservoir. The good ones (like the ones we carry) have enough capacity for a full day of appointments.

Who actually needs these?

More people than you'd think:

  • Mobile head spa techs — Load up your van and go. No need to rely on the client's plumbing.
  • Booth renters — You can't exactly drill into the landlord's floor.
  • Home studios — Your guest bathroom sink is not a viable shampoo bowl.
  • Pop-ups and events — Set up anywhere, tear down fast.
  • Small spaces — That unused corner of your salon just became a head spa station.

Non-plumbed vs plumbed: the real trade-offs

Non-plumbed pros:

  • Put it anywhere. Move it whenever you want.
  • Zero installation cost. Seriously, zero.
  • Tank it with you if you move locations.

Non-plumbed cons:

  • You have to refill the tank. Takes maybe 2 minutes between clients.
  • Water capacity is limited by tank size (most are 60-90 liters, enough for 4-6 clients).
  • You need to clean the tank regularly (takes 5 minutes, don't skip it).

What I tell salon owners who ask

If you own your space and have the budget for plumbing, go plumbed. It's less daily maintenance.

But if you're renting, starting out, or want flexibility? Non-plumbed all the way. The newer tanks are surprisingly good. We sell these to established salons in NYC who just didn't want to deal with their building's plumbing restrictions.

Quick tips from experience

  • Get a model with a heated tank. Cold water mid-wash is not a good look.
  • Place your bed near a water source if possible. Makes refills way easier.
  • Budget 5 minutes at the end of the day to drain and wipe the tank. Takes care of any mineral buildup.
  • Have a backup water container if you're booked solid. A 5-gallon jug works fine.

Common questions I get

Q: Can I use a non-plumbed bed every day, for real?
A: Yeah, plenty of salons do. The key is picking one with a decent pump. Cheap pumps get loud after a few months. Ours use Japanese motors — quieter and last longer.

Q: How often do I need to refill?
A: Depends on the tank size and how many clients you see. A 90-liter tank usually gets you through 5-6 head spa sessions. Refill during your lunch break and you're good.

Q: Is the water pressure as good as plumbed?
A: Honestly? Pretty close. Modern electric pumps push water just fine. Your clients won't notice the difference.

Q: What about water heating?
A: The tank heats and holds temp. Just make sure you get one with a thermostat. Cold wash is a one-way ticket to a bad Yelp review.
